Hillcrest’s Brookside Intensive Treatment Unit

The Brookside Intensive Treatment Unit strives to break the debilitating cycle of multiple failed placements and repeated hospitalizations experienced by our students.

We provide crisis stabilization and comprehensive diagnostic assessment services for children with severe behavioral and psychiatric challenges. Each student referred to the Brookside ITU (ages 6-18 at intake) has a unique history and combination of needs that require us to provide highly specialized and individualized services. Our high staffing ratios, small classrooms, and lower clinical caseloads allow us to personalize a plan that allows each child to build upon their strengths and prepare for a less restrictive setting. Within the first 45-day stabilization/evaluation period, we will conduct a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary diagnostic assessment, leading to recommendations for continued care – be it step down to one of our less-restrictive campuses, return to the child’s home community or, if necessary, continued care at our more intensive level of supervision at the ITU. Hillcrest is committed to learning what works for students to ensure that their continued progress, stability and permanency goals are fully supported.

The Brookside Intensive Unit is located in the beautiful Berkshire Hills of Great Barrington, MA. The campus is a large facility in a rural setting, with access to many recreational and cultural activities. We believe that an active, engaged student is more likely to succeed and encourage participation in diverse activities including hiking, theater, music, canoeing and challenge activities on our high-ropes course. As our students exhibit safe behaviors we encourage involvement in the surrounding community as deemed appropriate by the treatment team – of which families and guardians are an active part.

ToothFebruary was National Children’s Oral Health Month
Hillcrest Dental Care took part in National Children’s Oral Health Month by visiting students in several elementary schools in Berkshire County with support from donations from Greylock Federal Credit Union & TD Charitable Foundation.  Registered dental hygienists from Hillcrest Dental Care volunteered their time for the third consecutive year, to visit with local students to talk with them about good oral hygiene and nutrition.

According to the CDC, although there have been notable declines in tooth decay among children and adults over the past three decades, tooth decay remains the most common chronic disease of children aged 6 to 11 years (25%) and of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years (59%).  Tooth decay is four times more common than asthma among adolescents aged 14 to 17 years (15%).

The Hillcrest Dental Care hygienists visit the schools and meet with pre-school through 4th grade classrooms and focus on teaching children that they are partners with them in caring for their teeth. Children learn how cavities can be avoided with a balanced diet, healthy snacks, and brushing and flossing each day. Regular dental check-ups are also a key to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

Hillcrest Dental Operations Director Tricia Hunt said, “The good news is that tooth decay and other oral diseases that can affect children are preventable.  With the continued support from Greylock Federal Credit Union and TD Charitable Foundation, National Children’s Oral Health Month provides the ideal time to reach out to our community and provide education and materials on the importance of good oral health.  We look forward to continuing to do this year after year”.

Highpoint Program Campus Construction

coming-soonThe Highpoint campus located in Lenox, Massachusetts currently has an exciting physical plant upgrade in the works. We are in the process of adding a brand new dormitory to our existing student residence halls. The new dormitory was approved by the Town of Lenox in early 2014 and construction began in September of 2014. The new building will replace our existing Hilltop building which currently houses Fernbrook students.

Our new dorm is being constructed by a local firm based in Pittsfield, MA. Contractors are braving below zero temperatures and mountains of snow to ensure the dormitory project stays on schedule! The finished product will be a townhouse style building consisting of separate residences. Each residence will be able to house six students. The students who will live in the new building will each be provided a single bedroom.  Each dorm will have a large recreational area and living room on the first floor of their unit and the six single bedrooms will be located upstairs, above the recreational space. The dormitory will have upgraded safety and security measures making it a great benefit to the students of the Highpoint campus. The building will also house a separate supervisor’s office making supervisors centrally located for the staff and students to access.

We anticipate the new building being completed and ready for our students to move in by September of 2015. A celebration will be planned for Move In Day for our students and staff as well as a celebration to say goodbye to an existing but outmoded dorm.
